An Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) is a circuit breaker that disconnects the power when an arc is detected to prevent a fire from starting. It will also trip when there is a short circuit or when an overload occurs. There are normal arcing conditions such as when you turn on a light switch, remove or insert a plug into a receptacle and unwanted arcing conditions such as a nail puncturing a wire from hanging a picture, poorly installed switches or outlets, natural aging and cord exposure to sunlight and heat vents. The AFCI should distinguish between the two conditions and cut the power off during unwanted arcing situations. All AFCI's have a test button which is located on front of the breaker. The AFCI should be tested once a month to ensure they are working properly and providing protection from fires initiated by arcing faults. If the test button does not trip the AFCI when pressed, the device should be replaced. All bedroom outlets must be protected by an AFCI according to the Canadian Electrical Code.
